Technology Assisted Counselling at CQ Psych Services

We’re all in this together now! While we are all preparing for the impact of COVID-19 and people are taking important precautions such as social distancing and self-isolation, CQ Psych Services is continuing to support our community by temporarily adding Technology Assisted Counselling (TAC) sessions to our available services.

Just as you’re utilising apps like FaceTime and Skype to keep connected with family and friends, you can now schedule videoconferences that allow you to connect with your clinician using both video and/or audio connection.

While our clinic loves connecting with our clients and seeing your faces in our clinic, there are many advantages of taking therapy online. Moving from face-to-face to TAC sessions is the best way to keep our community and country as safe as possible. Face-to-face consultations now mean psychologists and clients are at risk of both infections, and further spreading of the coronavirus.

In times of uncertainty and vulnerability, we trust in our experienced clinicians who are well prepared to handle a crisis like the one we’re in by taking mental health care online. TAC has been utilised by Australian psychologists for years, and research clearly indicates that online therapy is extremely effective for treating various kinds of mental illnesses. Our team is getting ahead of the game and following the latest advice to reduce nonessential face to face contact. The use of available technology is a fantastic option to ensure that we can continue to support you and for you to maintain regular therapy through this period when many will experience increased stress.

Is the session any different from a face-to-face session?

Your clinician will continue to conduct your therapy in the same way that you’re accustom to. Not much should change, as our clinicians are trained to provide online services in the best possible way. If need be, they are well prepared to be able to tailor interventions and therapies to suit your individual circumstances.

Your clinician will still take clinician notes – but rest assured, no sessions are recorded. We have strict privacy measures in place in accordance with national regulations.

What do I need to access TAC services and maintain confidentiality?

  • A private space to link up with your clinician
  • A reliable internet connection
  • You don’t need a headset/headphones, but you might find them more comfortable
  • A device with microphone/camera (if you have a smart phone, laptop, iPad, or computer with a camera, then you’re all set!)

How can I prepare for my session?

Before any TAC services can be provided, you are required to complete a TAC Form authorising the use of phone and/or video services – simply complete and email back to our Admin. You will also be provided with all the necessary information and steps required in order to connect with your psychologist.

Just like face to face sessions, you need to set yourself up a few minutes early to be ready for the session to start on time. Prior to your TAC session, make sure your phone or computer is charged and can last the entire session, be mindful of your background / environment, and have your mobile phone readily accessible just in case our admin team are trying to reach you to advise of a problem.

At the time of your appointment, you can follow the connection instructions supplied to connect with your clinician.

Does the use of this technology cost anything?

TAC allows clients to access services with no additional cost to you. The service will require some internet use.

Does a TAC session cost extra?

Usual session fees cover the time spent with your clinician. Therefore, we charge our normal fee for video/telephone sessions.

Available session rebates available?

Some of the usual rebates may not be available with TAC services.

Medicare

As we are not a Bulk Billing clinic, some clients will not be eligible for the usual Medicare rebate even with a Mental Health Care Plan. Please call us to discuss what you may be eligible for.

Private Health

We advise you to check with your private health insurer to see if you can access a rebate under these circumstances.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

If your session is funded by your employer, your normal billing arrangements should apply. Ask our admin team if you’re unsure.

WorkCover

If your session is funded by WorkCover, your normal arrangements should apply. Ask our admin team if you’re unsure.

NDIS

If you are a Self-Managed or Plan Managed NDIS client, your normal Service Agreement arrangements should apply. Ask our admin team if you’re unsure.
